APA Style for Writing: Audio Materials

This guide will cover APA format for papers.

Formatting

Note: All citations should be double spaced and have a hanging indent in a Reference List.

A "hanging indent" means that each subsequent line after the first line of your citation should be indented by 0.5 inches.

Music Recordings

Songwriter's Last Name, First initial. Second Initial if Given. (Copyright Year). Title of song [Recorded by Artist First Name Last Name if different from songwriter]. On Title of Album [Medium of recording]. Location: Label. (Recording Date if different from copyright date)

Reference List Example

Robertson, R. (1968). The weight [Recorded by Aretha Franklin]. On This Girl's in Love with You [CD]. New York, NY: Atlantic Records. (1969)

In-Text Paraphrase

(Songwriter's Last Name, Copyright Year)

Example: (Robertson, 1968/1969)

Note: If the copyright year and recording year are different, use both dates in the text citation.

In-Text Quote

(Songwriter's Last Name, Copyright Year, track number)

Example: (Robertson, 1968/1969, track 8)

Note: If the copyright year and recording year are different, use both dates in the text citation.

Podcasts

Director/Producer/Host's Last Name, First initial. Second Initial if Given. (Role in the production e.g. Host, Director, Producer). (Year podcast was released, Month Day if given). Title of podcast episode: Subtitle if given [Audio podcast]. Title of Podcast. Retrieved from URL.

Reference List Example
